Do I need to make changes?
Yes. By 1 January 2027, all Queensland dwellings must be fitted with compliant interconnected smoke alarms.
- Selling, renting, or re-renting a dwelling: Interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms are already a legal requirement.
- All other dwellings: Compliance must be achieved by 1 January 2027.
Who can install smoke alarms?
Smoke alarms connected to the household electricity supply (240-volt hardwired smoke alarms) must be installed by a licensed electrician.

Photoelectric Smoke Alarms
Photoelectric Smoke Alarms contain a photocell and a light beam shining away from the cell.
When smoke enters the test chamber, some of the light is scattered by the smoke particles and hits the cell, triggering the alarm.
Photoelectric alarms are best at detecting smoky and smouldering fires, which is a common type of house fire. Dust and/or insects entering the unit can cause false alarms, so they have to be occasionally cleaned.
Ionisation Smoke Alarms
Ionisation Smoke Alarms contain a very small amount of radioactive material, which reacts to particles emitted in a fire and sets off the alarm.
Ionisation alarms are best at detecting fast-flaming fires that don’t emit much visible smoke. But many house fires tend to be smoky and smouldering long before they flare into flame, and ionisation alarms aren’t as quick at detecting these.
They can also be prone to false alarms from cooking and steam, so they shouldn’t be located too near your kitchen or bathroom.
Dual Sensor Smoke Alarms
Dual Sensor Smoke Alarms contain both an ionisation sensor and a photoelectric sensor.
They get the best and worst features of both types. They can be a good option but as with any ionisation alarm, don’t install them too near a kitchen or bathroom.

Where must smoke alarms be installed?
Smoke alarms are required on every storey of a dwelling:
- In every bedroom
- In hallways that connect bedrooms with the rest of the dwelling
- If no hallway is present, between the bedrooms and the remainder of the storey
- On storeys without bedrooms, at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to an exit
Placement requirements:
- Ceiling-mounted, ideally near the centre of the room (preferred but not mandatory)
- At least 300 mm from corners or light fittings
- At least 400 mm from air-conditioning vents or ceiling fan blades
- Special requirements apply for sloped or exposed beam ceilings
Can battery-operated smoke alarms be used?
Yes. In existing dwellings, battery-operated smoke alarms may be installed provided they are:
- Photoelectric type
- Compliant with Australian Standard 3786:2014
- Powered by a non-removable 10-year battery
Important requirements:
- In new constructions and major renovations, smoke alarms must be hardwired (240-volt) photoelectric type.
- If an existing dwelling already has 240-volt smoke alarms, they must be replaced with 240-volt photoelectric alarms when required.
- Any smoke alarm that is more than 10 years old or fails when tested must be replaced.
- When replacing smoke alarms, they must match the existing power source:
- Replace 240-volt alarms with 240-volt photoelectric alarms
- Replace battery-operated alarms with 10-year non-removable battery photoelectric alarms
